Monday Book Club Selection (August 2018)

I am hosting August 2018 Book Club (Monday the 13th) and out of the choices I gave the group, the chosen read is The Perfect Mother by Aimee Molloy.

Vanity Fair calls it one of the most anticipated books of the summer. Soon to be a major motion picture starring Scandal’s Kerry Washington.

An addictive psychological thriller about a group of women whose lives become unexpectedly connected when one of their newborns goes missing.

They call themselves the May Mothers—a collection of new moms who gave birth in the same month. Twice a week, with strollers in tow, they get together in Prospect Park, seeking refuge from the isolation of new motherhood; sharing the fears, joys, and anxieties of their new child-centered lives.

When the group’s members agree to meet for drinks at a hip local bar, they have in mind a casual evening of fun, a brief break from their daily routine. But on this sultry Fourth of July night during the hottest summer in Brooklyn’s history, something goes terrifyingly wrong: one of the babies is abducted from his crib. Winnie, a single mom, was reluctant to leave six-week-old Midas with a babysitter, but the May Mothers insisted that everything would be fine. Now Midas is missing, the police are asking disturbing questions, and Winnie’s very private life has become fodder for a ravenous media.

Though none of the other members in the group are close to the reserved Winnie, three of them will go to increasingly risky lengths to help her find her son. And as the police bungle the investigation and the media begin to scrutinize the mothers in the days that follow, damaging secrets are exposed, marriages are tested, and friendships are formed and fractured.

My other two choices were my preferred genres of romance but alas, they didn’t garner the top votes. I will still listen to both The Smallest Part by Amy Harmon and In The Stillness by Andrea Randall in the future, though the latter book hasn’t been recorded in audiobook form yet.

Have you read or listened to any of these yet? Your thoughts? What bookclub read do you recommend to mine?

  1. The Perfect Mother sounds absolutely horrifying (but interesting)… but that’s probably just because our 3rd baby is only 3 months old and my husband told me he had a dream the other night that one of them was missing….

    I hope you like it!

I haven’t heard of any of the others but I don’t read a lot of romance.

Thank you for visiting my own book review blog (Contemplate and intimate) earlier!

  2. I read the Perfect Mother and liked it very much. I hope you enjoy it and that you have a great discussion. I really enjoyed The Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hillier and The Perfect Couple by Elin Hilderbrand.

    1. I haven’t heard of Everthing is Beautiful. Who’s the author? We need recommendations. We just read The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Reid Jenkins and that was another hit. But I would love any other suggestions from you.
      Thanks Jennifer

      1. It’s written by Mira T. Lee. Check out my Huggable Book shelf on Goodreads when you have a chance: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/32340179-jennifer-tarheelreader-traveling-sister?shelf=huggable-books It has a bunch of my recent favorite reads. Seven Husbands was a wonderful read! Let me know once you look at the list if you have any other questions about what might be a good fit. I have another shelf that is recent favorites, and it has a lot of overlap with the huggable shelf, but I’ll put that one here too: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/32340179-jennifer-tarheelreader-traveling-sister?shelf=recent-favorites
