Blurb: Bethany Lu Carlisle is devastated when the tabloids report actor Keanu Reeves is about to tie the knot. What?! How could the world’s perfect boyfriend and forever bachelor, Keanu not realize that making a move like this could potentially be devastating to the equilibrium of…well…everything! Not to mention, he’s never come face to face with the person who could potentially be his true soulmate—her.
Desperate to convince Keanu to call off the wedding, Lu and her ride-or-die BFF Truman Erikson take a wild road trip to search for the elusive Keanu so that Lu can fulfill her dream of meeting her forever crush and confess her undying love. From New York to Los Angeles, Lu and True get into all sorts of sticky situations. Will Lu be able to find Keanu and convince him she’s the one for him? Or maybe she’ll discover true love has been by her side all along…
What made this audio rom-com special was the authenticity of friendship and love between Bethany Lu Carlisle and Truman Erikson. They had the kind of relationship where they really shared and depended on each other in a deep way, which is to be expected since they have been friends for twenty years.
40 year old Lu reads that her crush Keanu Reeves is getting married on social media and she sets out to stop him from making what she believes to be a huge mistake. Tru, who is in love with his best friend Lu, agrees to be her wing man on the road trip to find and rescue Keanu. On this road trip, Tru shows the depth of his feelings via his actions and support of Tru’s various schemes. He doesn’t dissaude or make Lu feel silly for wanting to be the one to marry Keanu. If anything, he comforts her, encourages her and holds her when she needs it. These parts of their adventures were amusing, sweet and insightful to their relationship.
Listening to this audiobook was a mixed bag for me. While I really liked the main characters, it was a slow burn romance. It also felt like a new adult story because the narrator’s voice sounded young, not like a 40 year old woman and man. In addition, the enunciation of Lu and Tru sounded similar enough to be a tad confusing. But the dual POV makes the reader have an inside track into both Tru and Lu’s motivation and emotions. These are two people who got each other and cared deeply for each other. I wonder why it took them twenty years to get to their HEA because the chemistry, trust and respect was already so evident.
Tru was an awesome hero. He just wanted Lu to be happy and keep the promise he felt that he didn’t get to fulfill to her in their youth. I also loved that it never felt like Tru felt insecure about Lu’s unwavering affection for Keanu Reeves. I enjoyed how the author wove the movie references into her plot. What a cute, sweet and humorous journey from friends to lovers.
